Get to Know Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone

Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone Beta is an easy-to-use environment for dynamic application development with Silverlight or XNA Framework. It's a complete, stand-alone IDE that features a streamlined interface that includes features such as a phone-based designer skin, Windows Phone project templates, and a toolbox.

Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone Beta is an easy-to-use environment for dynamic application development with Silverlight or XNA Framework. Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone Beta is a complete, stand-alone IDE that features a streamlined interface that includes features such as a phone-based designer skin, Windows Phone project templates, and a Toolbox that contains controls supported on Windows Phone.

Note:

Because most of the features of Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone Beta are shared with Visual Studio, the documentation for Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone Beta may refer either to Visual Studio 2010 for Windows Phone Beta or to Visual Studio.

Installation and Setup

When you install Windows Phone Developer Tools, you install Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone Beta, Windows Phone Emulator, Expression Blend, XNA Game Studio, samples, and other SDK components. If Visual Studio 2010 Professional or higher is already installed on your development computer, an add-in for Visual Studio 2010 Professional is automatically installed as well. The add-in provides Windows Phone application development support equivalent to Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone Beta.

Note:

To use the Visual Studio add-in, the final release version of Visual Studio 2010 Professional is required for Windows Phone Developer Tools.

  • Visual Studio 2010 Express

  • Visual Studio 2008 C# Express

  • Visual Studio 2008 Standard or above

Installation of Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone Beta

The projects that you create with either Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone Beta or the add-in are compatible with Expression Blend for Windows Phone. You can share these projects with Expression Blend without any conversion issues or loss of functionality.

Unsupported Features

Some features present in Visual Studio 2010 Professional are not supported when you are using the add-in for a Windows Phone project. These unsupported features include the following:

  • Profiler

  • IntelliTrace

  • Lab Management

  • Testing

  • Data (add data source, schema compare)
